John Bates and the Eightballs give a lecture and performance of English rock lyrics of the 1960s, on 2 April 2025. And a good time was had by all!
John Bates, recently retired as head of the URV's Language Service, gave a revealing analysis of the song lyrics of The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan, accompanied by performances of the songs by The Eightballs, with our own John Style on guitar and vocals.
Highlights included the explanation of what is meant by "I'm on a losing streak" in the parlance of London, and the structured vignettes of Eleanor Rigby as a radical break from a beginning in repetitive love songs.
